As behavior problems are the number one reason for
owners to part with their pets, behavior counseling is something our
veterinarians take quite seriously. Similar to humans, animals can
experience anxiety, fears, phobias and compulsivity. Many of these
feelings often manifest as aggression, extreme shyness or inappropriate
urination and/or defecation. In some cases, there is a medical
explanation for an animal’s undesirable behavior; therefore, we always
include a full physical exam in our consults and some basic diagnostic
tests such as blood work is highly recommended, especially prior to
prescribing medications to help these problems. In many cases, mild
behavior problems can be improved with consultation and behavior
modification alone. A good example of this is urination outside of the
litter box. Typically 40% of these cases are solved with litter box
management alone.
Our behavior consultations are typically one hour
long. This allows the doctor adequate time to determine if your pet’s behavior
problem is related to a physical condition and/or make necessary recommendations
for treatment. Behavior modification is discussed at great length at these
visits. Prior to scheduling a consultation, a questionnaire will be filled out
asking about your pets’ problems, prior history and other basic information. During the consultation, expect to bring your pet with you in addition to
as many family members as possible so that everyone can assist in the diagnosis
and treatment of your pet. It is also recommended (but not required) that your
pet be fasted i.e. no food for 8 hours before the appointment.
